About the New Years Suntrap share:
The Chinese Lunar New Year has a wealth of folk legends and orthodox origin stories. The most widely spread among folks is the story of the Nian Beast: According to legend, in ancient times, there was a ferocious one-horned monster named Nian. It lived deep in mountain forests or at the bottom of the sea all year round. On the last day of the twelfth lunar month (Chinese New Year's Eve), it would crawl ashore, break into villages, harm people and livestock, destroy crops, and harass common folks. People would be filled with fear and anxiety at the end of each year. Later, people discovered that the Nian Beast was afraid of the color red, flames and bright lights, as well as loud noises. Therefore, on New Year's Eve, they pasted red couplets, set off firecrackers, lit lamps and stayed up all night to drive away the Nian Beast and spend the day safely. Over time, these practices evolved into the customs of celebrating the Lunar New Year.
In addition to this folk myth, there is also a beautiful legend related to official history: In ancient times, after Shun ascended the throne, he led his subordinates to worship heaven, earth, mountains, rivers and deities on the first day of the first lunar month, to express gratitude to his ancestors and share celebrations with all the people. Since then, people have regarded this day as the start of the new year, and the tradition of celebrating the beginning of the year gradually took shape. This is also one of the orthodox accounts of the origin of the Spring Festival.
